Dalam Peraturan Sekretaris Jenderal (Persekjen – Persesjen) Kemendikbud Nomor 8 Tahun 2020 Tentang Petunjuk Pelaksanaan (Juknis Juklak) Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP) tahun 2020, dinyatakan bahwa Program Indonesia Pintar Pendidikan Dasar dan Pendidikan Menengah yang selanjutnya disebut PIP Dikdasmen adalah Program Indonesia Pintar yang diperuntukkan bagi anak berusia 6 (enam) tahun sampai dengan 21 (dua puluh satu) tahun untuk mendapatkan layanan pendidikan sampai dengan tamat satuan pendidikan dasar dan menengah. Sedangkan Program Indonesia Pintar Pendidikan Tinggi yang selanjutnya disebut PIP Pendidikan Tinggi adalah Program Indonesia Pintar yang diperuntukkan bagi Mahasiswa yang diterima di Perguruan Tinggi.
